Visual Arts

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an academic programme designed to give students around the world a chance to earn a rigorous, internationally recognized diploma for entry into universities.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) framework in middle school art classes emphasizes a holistic approach to education, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. Students explore various art forms, techniques, and media while engaging in inquiry-based learning. Lessons are designed around global themes, encouraging students to connect their artistic expression to personal, local, and international contexts.

Reflection is a core component, with students documenting their creative process, analyzing their work, and considering different perspectives. Collaboration and communication are also emphasized, as students participate in discussions and group projects. Through this approach, IB helps middle schoolers develop not only artistic skills but also a deeper understanding of the world and their role within it.

1. Adherence to Assessment Criteria

Visual Arts is a performance-based class, where student learning is evaluated based on the analysis of the art-making process, including but not limited to creativity, technique, engagement, and progress. Active engagement ensures students meet IB requirements for creativity, exploration, and reflection.

2. Connection Between Behavior and Grades
Per the Gwinnett AKS (Academic Knowledge and Skills), the student’s behavior and academic performance are directly connected. As such, students must exhibit positive behavior and actively participate in all aspects of the class, including both the creative process and classroom discussions.

3. Reflection and Documentation
Active participation is a critical aspect of the student's success in the art class. This includes consistently engaging in the creation of artwork, following directions, and contributing to the classroom environment. Engaged students thoroughly reflect on their creative process, a key component of IB grading.

4. Expectations for Student Behavior
The expectations set by the Art Teacher, ensure that the student maintains good behavior and strives to engage fully in all classroom activities. Failure to meet these expectations may impact the student's academic performance and grade.

5. Acknowledgement and Understanding

Parents should acknowledge understanding of the performance-based nature of the art class, the connection between behavior and grades, and the importance of active participation for the student’s success.
